administration, paul ryan seized on the remarks as an admission of failure. this is deadly earnest. how they can justify, how can they justify raising taxes on the middle class? the middle-class has been buried last four years. how, in lord's name, can they justify raising taxes? >> vice-president biden today said that the middle-class over the last of we or years has been buried. we agree. that means we need to stop digging, which means we have to collect mitt romney as president of the united states. >> meanwhile, paul ryan has appeared in videos online. in a speech delivered last november, he said 30% of americans want to live off the government. today, 70% of americans get more benefit from the federal government and a payback in taxes. you could argue we are already passed a tipping point. the good news is, survey after survey, poll after poll, still shows we are a center-right country. 70% of americans won the american dream. only 30% want the welfare state. what that tells us is, at least half of those people currently in that category are there not of their wish or will. >> new video

. particularly on this voucher question, and what romney would propose with paul ryan to do to medicare. i mean, this is where i heard from a couple republicans well now we're on to medicare and this is where the president will just clobber him because it's an issue that's very sensitive and it's one in which mitt romney basically if we get back to this question in secrecy, romney's answer to how are you going to do this, how are you going to cap the ryan of healthcare inflation without hurting quality he basically says well the free market will figure that out which is to say there's not many details about it. the president didn't press him to the mat on that. he gave an answer and assumed everybody would get there. that was true on a number of different policy fronts in the debate time. >> rose: including energy. yes? >> i was going to pick on what john just said. i was struck by how ill prepare the president was. let me take two specifics. one on pre existing, coverage on preexisting conditions. romney is saying for a while he's for it for people who are already covered but not people who ar

republican argument paul ryan was making over the week end on sunday morning television it is the argument that's not so much taxing policy that they object to. the issue is spending. that that is the issue that they're most opposed to. and they believe that unless we do something about government spending we can never get the economy on the right track. >> where i agree with him is that we have to look very carefully at how we spend our money there are certain areas where we need to spend more. i think we need to spend more on infrastructure. anybody who travels around the world like i do realizes that america has a third world infrastructure. we need to spend more on education. one of the concerns that i raise in my book is america has become the country with the least equality of opportunity of any of the advanced industrial countries. >> equality of opportunity meaning -- >> that the life chances of a child are more dependent on the education and income of his parents than in any of the other advanced countries for which there is data. and the main reason for this is lack of e

decreased during obama's term in office. only slightly more than half knew that paul ryan is the republican vice presidential nominee. the director of the annenberg center, kathleen hall jamieson, our master media decoder is back with us. welcome. >> thank you. >> so who's responsible for the widespread unawareness or ignorance that you report in your survey? is it the candidate, the media, or the voter? >> it's all three. and fortunately, we have the opportunity with presidential debates to do something that reliably increases knowledge. we've been studying presidential debates for a long time as a scholarly community. and to our surprise, we consistently find that those who watch debates, regardless of the level of knowledge they come in with, come out with more accurate knowledge as a general group. and they do this because those who haven't paid a great deal of attention have a lot to learn. those of us who've paid a lot of attention still missed things. the news may have covered something one day and we weren't paying a whole lot of attention. or maybe we got one candidates' position a

growth, and governor romney talks more about management and spending efficiency, paul ryan talks mainly about spending cuts as essential, even more so than changing the revenue base. right? >> i mean, i don't want to -- but your system -- >> how the suck eggs. >> that expression. >> what does that mean? >> you won't tell your grandmother how to suck eggs because grandmother knows. >> you know better than i your system with the elections every two years for congress, it is a very different system, we now have legislative fiv five-year terms, parliamentary terms so it is a different issue there. i mean, your challenge, obviously is to get the medium term agreement with the $4 trillion worth of savings that the president is is proposed. >> over ten years. >> over ten years, but you also have got to make sure that in the short-term, you don't strangle your economy. and what i can tell you is our experience is we have strangled our economy. so our debt is going up, when your economy shrinks by definition your debt to gdp ratio, your debt to national income ratio goes up instead of dow

[ laughter ] >> that's a good one. >> it may help in his like built nesome parts of this nation but at the end of the day, women care about the economy, jobs and government spending and they will capture the vote
